Great job to our 4th/5th grade students who participated in the spring band and orchestra concert on May 9th! They performed in a morning matinee for the students of Jane Addams and an evening performance for families. You have made such significant gains as musicians from the fall concert! Thank you Emily Deinken (band teacher) and Denise Anderson-Alpers (orchestra teacher) for all of your hard work with the students through weekly lessons and group practices! Way to go!

Chalk fun during “Family” time on this beautiful spring day that felt like summer! Family time is an opportunity in our school day for students to be grouped together with multiple aged students from K-5th. There are typically 3-4 students from each grade level mixed together within one Family. Each Family meets three days a week for 20 minutes. Students stay with this Family teacher for the entire year and each year they rotate to a new Family teacher. Kindergarten students are paired with their siblings in the same Family. During Family time each week, students work on the leadership skills and the seven habits with lessons from Leader in Me program, opportunities for coding/technology practice, learning to play games and cooperate with others, decorate the hallways, practice for the musical, etc. The relationships between the students and teacher built within one year in each Family is so fun to watch develop! Students gain so many valuable skills of teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, and friendships! We love Family time at ACE!

Teacher Appreciation
Last week for Teacher Appreciation Week, the Sioux Falls Education Foundation hosted an event where any family could recognize previous or current educators by donating $25 or more in their honor. All City was lucky enough to have four teacher recipients honored last week. Thank you to those families who took the time to recognize these educators! It truly means a lot! We are so fortunate and blessed to have a whole teaching staff of rockstars! They truly care about each child that walks through those doors and makes a daily positive difference in their lives! Thank you, teachers and staff, for all you do! You are the best!

Congratulations to Mrs. Hannemann on her upcoming retirement! On May 5th at The Country Club, Mrs. Hannemann was surrounded with support by family, some of the Jane Addams teachers, and the SFSD community in celebration of her and many other educators in the district retiring or celebrating 25 years in the SFSD. It was great to have the 61st annual Recognition Celebration back to celebrate our educators who do so much for our SF students! Thank you, Mrs. Hannemann, for every life you have touched in a special way! You will be missed so much! Enjoy your retirement!

Parent/guardian feedback is important to SFSD! We just launched a 7-question survey - which takes 5 minutes or less - to help guide the next steps toward becoming the BEST school district in the nation! Check your email or paste this URL in your browser: https://survey.k12insight.com/r/QDVv1e The survey is open until the end of the school year. Take the survey once for each child enrolled. If you prefer to only take it on, please reference the oldest child in your household. Thanks for your participation!

Gelli Printing Fun in Art~~In art class last week, Mrs. Cabrera and her student teacher, Miss Isabel from USF, had the third grade students use gelli printing sets on book paper. This is a collaboration project working with Ms. Becker, our librarian, to use the prints to make a collage on a tree painting inspired by Earth Day and Gustav Klimt. Mrs. Cabrera was awarded these gelli printing sets as part of an Education Foundation grant last year! Way cool!

Every Friday, the third grade and kindergarten students 'buddy up' with a friend and read together for about 20 minutes. Some students go to Mrs. Pike's kindergarten room and the rest go to Miss Leloux's third grade room. This is a great time for all students to practice their reading and listening skills. For many students, this is a highlight of their week and a great way to spark a new friendship! Siblings always get to be buddies which is also such a special treat for them! We love our buddy time!

On April 25th, ACE 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades participated in the live virtual Magic of Recycling Show with Bill Kerwood. Bill's engaging presentation educated students on what to recycle, why to recycle, and how to recycle properly all while throwing in a little magic trick here or there! Thank you to The City of Sioux Falls Environmental Services Division, Troy Lambert, and Holly Meier for organizing this event for the students.

This year through the Discover Dairy program, the 3rd and 5th grade ACE classrooms 'adopted' a cow! Each month the classrooms were sent information about their baby calves and learned different facts about dairy farms, cows, etc. The 5th graders baby calf was named 'Kady' and the 3rd graders adopted 'Abby' from the same farm in Nebraska. On April 25th, the students got to do a live Zoom call to the farm to see an update on their baby calves. The local farmer was available for questions and shared facts about our cows and their farm. It was fun to see how much they have grown!

ACE third graders visited the Old Courthouse Museum to learn about the "Almost Forgotten Crafts of the Early Dakotas" on April 29. Students got a chance for an up close and personal lesson on making pottery, learning how the first printing presses worked, and how to spin yarn from animal fur to make clothing. Each presenter explained about their 'lost art' and how they are are still keeping it alive today! It was very interesting! After the presentations, students got a chance to tour the Old Courthouse Museum.

KIDS CARE On April 29, the All City 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in their monthly Kids Care community service activities. Kids Care is a monthly tradition of community service projects and volunteering to help out to local businesses/organizations in any way they need. Kids rotate each month to a different project throughout the year. This month students volunteered at DakotAbilities, LifeScape School, Ronald McDonald House, Downtown Library, St. Francis House, and had one in school activity to make May Day baskets. While at these organizations, students may clean/organize toys, play games and sing songs with the residents, organize/clean books & shelves, prepare bags of toiletries, make May Day baskets for others, etc. After each month project, students reflect in a journal about what they did and learned from helping others! The students feel so good about giving their time to help others! Thank you to Kristen Benidt, our Kids Care coordinator, for getting everything organized with the businesses/organizations. Also, a big thank you for the parents for driving and chaperoning at the different places. Kids Care would not be possible without your help!
