The annual end of the year Tug-of-War event was held during Family time on May 23rd. There are three rounds of competition. First round was kindergarten versus 1st grade. Second round was 2nd grade versus 3rd grade. Final round was 4th grade versus 5th grade. In the end, 1st grade, 3rd grade, and 5th grade were victorious! It is always lots of fun to watch them compete! Lots of fun!

May 20th marked our last Kids Care activity for the year. Kids Care is an opportunity for students to give back to their community. Kristen Benidt is our parent leader in charge and she does a great job of working with these organizations to set up these volunteer opportunities.
This month students were able to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, Lifescape, Downtown Library, St. Francis House, Outdoor Campus, and clean up the school neighborhood. Students may be asked to help clean, play games with the residents, and help pick up trash.
Thank you, Kristen, for all of your efforts in getting Kids Care ready each month! What a great opportunity for ACE kids to give back to their community!

Mrs. William's 1st graders got to go the Washington Pavilion on May 20th! They had fun exploring each floor! They even got to go to the Cinedome Theater and had a special science experiment lesson! Thanks to all of the families who helped chaperone and drove! So much fun!

Almost every Thursday, we have "School Store" run by our 4th and 5th graders. The Rock family is our parent leaders for School Store and they help prepare for the store each week by buying supplies, getting punch cards ready, and setting up and organizing the store with Thursday parent help. Students who are the cashiers work on dealing with change/punch cards, taking orders, being courteous to their patrons, and working with a smile! The money raised each week goes towards the end of the year trip for the 4th/5th grade students! Thank you to everyone who supported the school store this year by purchasing treats/snacks, to the Rock family for all of their time and invest into getting it ready each week, and to the Thursday parents who help with set up and making popcorn!

Last staff meeting for the Jane Addams was yummy and fun! Life Church provided us with delicious Bundt cakes and treats! They have been so good to us this year with monthly staff treats! Thank you!! Mrs. Cabrera ended our meeting with a demonstration on her gelli printing tools she received from an Education Foundation grant and staff got a crack at showing off their artistic side! Fun way to end our year!
Be sure to come to the art show tonight starting at 6:30!! The kids worked very hard this year in art and will miss Mrs. Cabrera next year!

We hope to see everyone at our Welcome/Farewell/Art Show tomorrow! We look forward to honoring our 5th grade families who will be leaving us at the end of this year. We are thankful for your many years of service to the ACE community!

The 2nd graders got to do some fun Drumfit workouts in music class today with Mrs. Anderson! Exercise and music is the perfect combo! So much fun!

The 1st and 2nd graders took advantage of the beautiful day to read outside in our new Outdoor Classroom area!! So nice out!

Earlier this year, the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation promoted to the community to sponsor a tree to be planted at each school in celebration of the Sioux Falls School District being a '150 Years Strong.' Our tree was gifted from the Aguilar-Pizer Family and Knobloch Drywall earlier this year and it has grown so much since the beginning of the dedication. Thank you for sponsoring our tree on our new playground for all to enjoy for the years to come!

Our Compliment Card Bulletin Board is full again! Way to go, kids! Students can earn a card by doing a positive behavior following our PBIS behavior system! We focus on these three B's: "Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe!" We also added in "Be You!" Now, teachers and students get to decide together what they would like to do as a reward! Nice job!

Our 5th graders went on their middle school visits this morning & it was so much fun running into Adriana (Alejandro’s sister)! She is a WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) Leader at Patrick Henry Middle School & gave us our tour!! So fun to see ACE graduates continuing to use their 'Leader in Me' skills/7 Habits by volunteering for leadership positions in middle school! We’re looking forward to seeing more and more ACE alumni as WEB leaders in a few years!

Autograph Day in Family today!!! This is always such a big end of the year tradition where students receive autograph books and get the chance to sign their name and write kind messages to each other! Our whole school swarms out into the hallways and signs away! Such a fun memory and keepsake!

Every year, students campaign and run to be on the Student Council from grades 1st-5th. Two members are chosen from each class. This year, Rob Hollan, was the parent volunteer in charge of monthly meetings where students met and discussed different needs of our school and ways they can make a difference. The final duty as a Student Council member is to go on a field trip to the City Hall. On their visit, they got to meet Mayor Paul Tenhaken and visit his office! They also met with Councilor Greg Neitzert at Carnegie Hall. The students were engaged, asked great questions, and learned a lot. Maybe we have some future politicians among us!
Rob wanted to thank all of the teachers for their support of Student Council this year, thanks to Christine Erickson for setting up the visit, and thanks to Matt Manes for helping out today too! Fun fact . . . Sioux Falls is now over 200k people with 3,200 miles of roads and growing!!

Mrs. Pike's kindergarten class went on a field trip on May 11 to the Butterfly House & Aquarium. They extended their learning from within the classroom by listening to the Butterfly House experts discuss the different types of butterflies they have. Recently, the kindergarteners even had some of their own butterflies hatch in their classroom! The kids had a great time playing at Sertoma Park too! Thanks to the parents who helped chaperone and drive!

Art Show/Farewell/Welcome is rescheduled to Thursday, May 19 with updated times!

Jane Addams building is host to two
schools within its walls. On one side of the building, we have our All City sections, but on the other side of our building is the Elementary Immersion Center (EIC)! The EIC program is a school for immigrant and refugee children who are typically just coming to America for the first time from all over the world and may be limited in basic English needs, so they come to this program to learn English and other academic/social skills in preparation to ‘graduate’ and go to their home based school. One way we unite the two schools is through ‘buddy classrooms.” This year Mrs. Gray’s ACE 5th grade is paired with Mrs. Peterson’s 4th/5th grade EIC students. They meet weekly and practice reading, playing math games, doing coding ozobots, Osmos, and other fun games! The kids form great friendships through these interactions! It is so fun to see their bond throughout the year!

All City third graders have been learning about fire safety, emergency home plans, and safety around the home. On May 13th, the Fire Safety House came to All City so students could practice escaping safely from a bedroom window if there was a fire in their home. Two Sioux Falls Firefighters helped with the practice and went through safety tips! If your family is in need of new fire alarms in your home, please call 211 and they will get some to you. Be sure also to practice a plan with your family to have a safe meeting place in case of an emergency! It is also a good idea for your child to know how to call 911 in an emergency and know their address/emergency contact phone numbers. Thank you to the firefighters who came to help out!

The 2nd graders finally got the chance to do their printmaking in art with Mrs. Cabrera! They had so much fun! Ms. Becker, Miss Stacy, Miss Gabby, some parents, and grandparents even got to join in! Nice job 2nd graders!
