Our ACE Student Council had a great trip to Carnegie Hall to learn about what all happens at City Hall daily on May 2. They learned about city projects, roles of city council members, how to be a good citizen, and where our tax dollars go. A huge thanks to Police Chief John Thum, Councilors Greg Neitzert and Sarah Cole for talking to the kids! Thanks to Rob Hollan, our Student Council advisor, for organizing the event and for Amy Hoines for driving and helping out. We are proud of this group for being so attentive, respectful, and representing our school so well!! Many compliments were received on the visit!! Way to go!

Every year the third graders in Miss Leloux's class get a chance to learn about fire safety and get a visit from the Fire Safety House and local firefighters. Students got to watch a video over what to do in the event of a fire in their home and then practiced first hand escaping from a first floor bedroom from the pretend fire. After they climb out, they go to their safe meeting place and practice making a phone call to 911. Firefighters chat with them but fire safety tips and answered questions afterwards. Good reminder for all families... • Does your child know what to do in the event of an emergency or different types of emergencies that could happen in your home? • Do they know your address? • Do you have a safe meeting place and an alternative spot and have practiced the plan with your family? • Do they have an emergency phone number memorized of a family member? It is a good reminder to check your batteries of your smoke detectors and review a family emergency plan! If you are in need of detectors, your family can get up to 4 free by calling 211. Thank you to the Sioux Falls Fire Department for providing this service to our third graders!

2023 All City Talent Show did not disappoint! We had almost 30 acts with students showcasing many talents from singing, dancing, playing an instrument, doing magic tricks, teaching us karate & balloon animals, and even the teachers showed off their "talents"! Third graders in Miss Leloux's class were doing math problems that talked about the Oregon Trail so of course she had to give them a little 'blast from the past' experience to the original Oregon Trail computer game 1990 version!! How many parents remember playing that as a kid??? They had a blast playing this "old school" game! 😉 So fun!

Our last swimming day for the year was on May 5! Kids love swimming with their friends and some even got to swim their teachers this time! Miss Leloux and Miss Brianna joined in for a swim! We even had our longtime helper in the boys locker, Jay, to take a dip for his final swim day with the kids! Thanks to all parents who assist in the locker room all year long! Thank you, Embe, for allowing us to come the first Friday of every month! We love it

We have become aware of a scam circulating that appears as if SFSD Child Nutrition Coordinator Gay Anderson is asking people to go out and purchase large dollar amounts of gift cards. Gay has NOT sent out a text or an email. Her communication devices appear to have been hacked. Please delete any communication and do not follow through with the request. Congratulations to our ULE program! The Education Foundation awarded the 39th (and second largest!) Public School Proud Grant yesterday! Karen Robinson, Katie Ristau, Jeff Dixen, Lisa Moon, Jess Hubert, Todd Schumacher and Christine Griebel received $9,839.60 for their proposal, “Build It Better with SAM!” They will purchase SAM Lab and Studio materials that will be used by 500 students in the gifted ed program at 22 elementary schools. SAM Lab is an online STEAM platform where students code, create, and collaborate. In the application, they wrote, “Our gifted students are fascinated by the lessons and coding this program has to offer, as it gives young learners an engaging, multilevel experience while embracing grade level standards. By providing complex and real-world problems, allowing students to create innovative products, and offering opportunities to practice higher order thinking skills, Sam Labs has made it easier and convenient for us to really challenge our gifted population. STEAM in the classroom encourages teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills – all essential for success. By teaching students how to think critically and solve problems creatively, we’re preparing them for successful futures.” Special thanks to the Education Foundation Board of Directors for their efforts to support all of our focus areas, including Public School Proud Grants! One hundred percent of our Board members donate every year, and they facilitate other gifts that advance our mission. We get to award 59 grants to 91 educators this spring because of their efforts. Thank you, Education Foundation Board of Directors!

Lindsey Gray from Jane Addams Elementary received the 34th Public School Proud Grant! She will use $815.34 for her proposal, “Dissecting Our Science Standards.” She wrote, “‘Dissecting Our Science Standards’ will allow me to continue to integrate STEM education into our science curriculum with intentionality. Requested materials will supplement our life science and earth science standards by providing students opportunities to dissect owl pellets, create growth mazes for plants, analyze and observe living brine shrimp, and crack open their own geodes! Students will also work in teams to discover the dark side of the moon and to create a solar science station. These experiments will be a great addition to our current curriculum as they will help students learn and observe patterns in nature happening both here on Earth and in our galaxy.” Xcel Energy: South Dakota has been a great partner, investing in hands-on STEM opportunities for students throughout the Sioux Falls School District!
