We have a new student teacher joining us at Hayward in the first grade Two-Way Immersion program. Welcome Señorita McKenzie Froiland!
REMINDER:
We will have face to face learning tomorrow with a 2-hour late start. The doors will open at 9:30am for breakfast. Please remember to send your child's device back to school with them tomorrow for in the classroom. If your child brought home a charger, remember to include that as well.
While you don't need to go to the extremes of Randy's mother in A Christmas Story when bundling up your student to head to school, please remember that it WILL be extremely cold tomorrow. Make sure your child is well dressed and warm before heading to school in the morning! Even when we need to hold recess indoors due to weather, your child will still be exposed to the frigid elements while traveling to and from school.
Here are some reminders from the National Weather Service when dealing with these extreme temperatures:
-Stay dry. Wet clothing results in much faster heat loss from your body. Wear waterproof insulated boots.
-Stay covered. Wear mittens or gloves, and wear a hat. At least half of your body heat is lost if your head is not covered.
-Dress layered. Trapped air between loose fitting clothing helps to insulate.
Dangerous weather conditions mean all activities/events for SFSD students for the
evening of Fri., Jan 12 and all day Sat., Jan 13, 2024 are being postponed.

Sioux Falls Public Schools are closed Monday, January 8, 2024 due to weather.
Hayward was one of the schools that received bikes to give out to kids from the local non-profit Chariots for Children. Raffle tickets were given out at the family breakfast on Wednesday and the smiles on these faces says it all!
We've had so many fun activities and enjoyed so many gifts from our community friends and partners, it's been hard to keep up with posting them on Facebook!
Monday was Dunn Bros and Giliberto's, Tuesday was pizza and sandwich platters, and yesterday long time supporters of Hayward and members of Promising Futures, Bob Thimjon and his wife, graciously offered us a delicious meal and delightful company.
Thank you all for your wonderful gifts this season. We appreciate all your love and care.

Thank you to this wonderful Hayward family for the lunchtime surprise! We appreciate it more than you'll ever know. Thank you for making us feel noticed and valued.
Tomorrow morning we will be hosting our family breakfast from 7:30am-8:30am.
Our parking lots on the north side of the building and on the west side of the park will be open for parent parking as well as along the streets.
*Please do not park anywhere in the circle drive tomorrow morning. *
We will have many parents who will not be able to stay for breakfast and will be needing to drop off their students. As always, our main goal is to keep things moving as quickly and safely as possible out front during that busy time.
Please help us make this happen by:
-leaving the circle drive open for moving traffic.
-use crosswalks and sidewalks rather than walking through moving traffic
-be prepared to be patient, tomorrow will be much busier than a normal day

Our Title I Family Breakfast is quickly approaching!
Make plans to be here on Wednesday morning from 7:30-8:30am for a free breakfast meal and a reading activity in your child's classroom.
Today is a beautiful December day, but we know it can't last forever in South Dakota! Make sure you and your student(s) know how to access Canvas for remote learning when weather that keeps kids home can be predicted in advance.
December 2nd was the big day for volunteers to make fleece blankets for Project Warm Up at Sonia Sotomayor. Now in its 18th year, nearly 38,000 blankets have been made & distributed to families in need for holidays, after tragedies & as gifts of warmth.
Not all blankets were made at the event though. Every year, students in Mrs. Siegel's third grade classroom work together to make blankets for the event as a group service project, a good reminder to them that part of being a HAWK is being KIND. This year it was a little more meaningful for these students as one of the blankets they created will be going to a classmate of their own who is having to learn from home this year. Mrs. Siegel and some of his friends will be delivering their gift of love and compassion to show him just how much we love and miss his smile at school.
